Passage ranking
Passage ranking (or passage indexing) is a ranking technique through which a search engine evaluates and positions individual excerpts of a page — a paragraph or a section — rather than the entire page. Rolled out by Google in 2021, it surfaces a precise answer buried deep within long-form content, even when the overall page is not specifically optimized for the query. The engine splits the page into passages, assigns each a relevance score, then displays the one that best matches the intent. This logic is central to generative engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews extract self-sufficient passages to build and cite their answers. For LUWIZ, optimizing at the passage level means writing standalone, factual and structured blocks that can be understood and reused in isolation by a human and a language model alike.
Passage ranking changes how your content is evaluated: it is no longer just the page that matters, but the quality of each of its fragments. This shift directly benefits long, rich content, provided it is well structured.
How it works
The engine segments a page into logical passages — often aligned with paragraphs and subheadings. Each passage is analyzed independently, turned into a semantic representation, then compared against the query intent. The most relevant passage is surfaced, even if the rest of the page covers a broader topic. This mechanism relies on natural language understanding and on chunking, which prepares content to be cleanly split.
In generative engines, the principle goes further: the RAG system retrieves the most useful passages, then the model synthesizes them and cites its sources. A poorly delimited passage that depends on its context stands little chance of being selected.
A concrete example
Imagine a 3,000-word LUWIZ page about GEO. A user searches for "difference between AEO and GEO." Rather than ignoring the page because its title covers GEO in general, the engine isolates the paragraph that precisely compares the two concepts and positions it. The full page never had to target that query: a single well-written passage is enough.
Why it matters
Passage ranking makes every section strategic. To maximize your chances of being cited, work on the AI citability of your blocks: one idea per paragraph, a direct answer up front, explicit figures and definitions.
This granular approach sits at the heart of our method and shapes your visibility on Google as much as in ChatGPT or Perplexity.
Questions fréquentes
Yes. A featured snippet is a display format in position zero, whereas passage ranking is an internal ranking mechanism that evaluates page excerpts. A well-ranked passage can feed a snippet, but the two concepts are not the same.
No. It mostly comes down to crafting each section so it stands on its own and makes sense in isolation. Clear paragraphs, explicit subheadings and direct answers are enough to make your passages usable without a full rebuild.
