llms.txt

llms.txt is a text file, placed at a site's root, that presents language models with a structured, hierarchical version of important content. Inspired by robots.txt, it aims to guide AI toward your key pages. But we have to be honest about its status: it's an emerging standard, not yet adopted by the major engines.

What llms.txt really does

The available data is clear: among the domains most cited by AI, only a tiny minority has an llms.txt, and AI bot traffic to that file is negligible. John Mueller (Google) has even stated that no major AI system consumes it to date. In other words: it doesn't earn citations.

A concrete example

An agency can build a clean llms.txt listing its strategic pages. Today, that won't bring it any additional citations, but it costs two hours and prepares it for possible future adoption. It's a bet on optionality, not a priority.

Why it matters (and doesn't)
