Anchor Text
Anchor text (or link anchor) is the clickable, visible text of a hyperlink, usually underlined and colored, that a user clicks to reach another page. In SEO, anchor text plays a decisive role: it tells search engines the topic and context of the destination page, helping it rank for the associated keywords. There are several anchor types: exact match (the target keyword as-is), partial match (a variation containing the keyword), branded (the company name), generic ("click here", "learn more"), naked (the raw URL), and image anchors (where the alt attribute acts as the text). A natural, diversified anchor profile sends a quality signal to Google, whereas over-optimizing exact-match anchors can trigger an algorithmic penalty. Anchor text applies to both internal linking and external link building, making it a core lever in any technical and off-page strategy.
Anchor text is one of the oldest and most reliable signals in search. Handled well, it reinforces your pages' relevance; mishandled, it becomes a risk factor.
How it works
When Google crawls a link, it analyzes the anchor text to understand what the destination page is about. An anchor like "technical SEO audit" pointing to a dedicated page confirms to the engine that the page truly covers that topic. It is a semantic voting mechanism: every link passes both authority (see PageRank) and topical context through its anchor.
This applies to internal and external links alike. Internally, you fully control your anchors: it is a powerful, risk-free lever to structure your internal linking and channel authority toward your strategic pages.
Anchor types
Anchors fall into several categories: exact match, partial match, branded, generic, naked, and image. A natural profile combines them in balanced proportions. On external backlinks, caution is required: an excess of over-optimized exact-match anchors is one of the historic triggers of the Penguin filter.
Why it matters
Anchor text remains a direct ranking factor. It also helps users anticipate the destination, improving experience and reducing disappointment. In the era of generative engines, clear anchors help crawlers understand your architecture, including those of LLMs.
At LUWIZ, we systematically audit our clients' anchor profiles to detect over-optimization and linking opportunities before any link-building campaign.
Questions fréquentes
There is no single perfect anchor: strength comes from diversity. A healthy profile blends branded, generic, partial and exact anchors. Favor descriptive, natural anchors over the mechanical repetition of your target keyword.
It isn't forbidden, but overusing it is. Too high a percentage of optimized exact-match anchors on external links can be read as manipulation and trigger a Penguin penalty. Keep them a minority within your overall profile.
