Rich snippet
A rich snippet is a search result on Google that is enhanced with extra visual elements generated from the structured data present in the page's code. Unlike a standard snippet, which is limited to the title, URL and meta description, a rich snippet displays additional information such as review stars, a price, an image, dates, cooking times or FAQ questions. These enhancements come from the Schema.org markup in JSON-LD that Google reads to understand the nature of the content. A rich snippet does not change the position in the SERP, but it strongly improves visibility and click-through rate. Many types exist depending on the content: recipes, products, reviews, events, FAQs, breadcrumbs or articles. Earning a rich snippet requires valid structured data that complies with Google's requirements and faithfully reflects the content visible on the page.
The rich snippet is one of the most cost-effective levers in SEO: it only requires a technical implementation and durably improves a result's visibility without depending on ranking.
How it works
A rich snippet is generated automatically by Google when it detects and trusts a page's structured data. This markup, written in JSON-LD using the Schema.org vocabulary, describes the nature of the content: a product, a recipe, a review, an event or an FAQ. Google reads these annotations, verifies that they match the visible content, then decides whether or not to enhance the display in the SERP.
The display remains at Google's discretion. Valid markup makes the page eligible, but never guarantees that an enriched snippet will appear.
The main types
Rich snippets take many forms depending on the markup: stars and ratings for reviews, price and availability for products, prep time and calories for recipes, dates and venues for events, or expandable questions through FAQPage markup. Each type follows precise requirements documented by Google.
Why it matters
An enhanced result takes up more visual space and sends immediate trust signals to the user. Stars, prices or images draw the eye and improve click-through rate, sometimes more than a ranking gain would. On increasingly crowded SERPs, this is an effective way to stand out.
At LUWIZ, we treat rich snippets as a foundational layer of technical SEO. Clean, maintained markup that complies with Google's latest specifications maximizes your chances of appearing while avoiding penalties tied to misleading markup.
Questions fréquentes
A rich snippet enhances a standard result with visual elements drawn from structured data, without changing its position. A featured snippet is a box shown at position zero that extracts a direct answer from a page's content.
You need to implement valid Schema.org markup in JSON-LD matching your content type, then check its eligibility with Google's Rich Results Test. Whether it actually appears remains at Google's discretion.
